My Father was a miner Never saw the light of day Every morning took a ride into Hell on the Henry Clay He said son you’re comin’ with me You gotta earn earn your way I’ve been a breaker boy ever since and will be ’til my dyin’ day Its not like we had any choice Come on we’re gonna make some noise We’re tough coal crackers Here come the Breakers Boys Fire up the lamps 10 hours in the hole Day after day in the cave and we’re breakin’ coal When they blow the whistle And they pull us up the shaft We’ll belly up to Kelly's bar and pour down some lager draft Here come the Breakers Boys 2 bucks aint a living The dead are lined up on the yard Can’t even buy a cigarette while the boss is smokin’ big cigars Well we’re gonna stop the digging And they'll put us behind bars But we’re marching down to Lattimer to organize and get what’s ours

Drama Queen 03:21
I'm just a victim of bad karma That's what you say You act like everything's a trauma Just to get your way I'm tired of living your soap opera It doesn't have to be that way It's time to drop the melodrama There's no cameras, There's no lights I don't see the paparazzi You don't have to live your life like a movie star on TMZ A little advice, You don't need to be extreme I'm just sayin' You know what I mean? You don't have to be a drama queen I'm no emotional detective I've got no PhD You've gotta keep things in perspective That's how I see it Take a moment, be reflective Don't text me OMG Some time to chill could be effective Drama queen you just want to be accepted You conjure up commotion 'cause existence seems so empty Everyone around you is asking, What's the deal? I'm sure they all will like you but you gotta keep it real You don't have to cause a scene You don't have to be so mean You don't have to be a drama queen

Yard Sale 03:50
Everybody on the block Is getting up at five o-clock To pull our junk out from the attic and the basement Well I'd rather stay in bed Gotta move the car instead 'cause we're gonna share the driveway with the neighbors We're arranging all our wares Out on tables and some chairs Lining up and down the sidewalk and the pavement It's all priced and organized And we ran an advertisement in the paper Yardsale Aisle after aisle Early morning Saturday Yardsale Outgrown and out of style Sometimes you can’t give it away Things we bought when we were young Things we thought that we’d become But we didn’t take the time to pursue it Things we were holding and preserve Finally thrown out to the curb Cause we realize we’ll never really use it We could’ve thrown it in the trash But if we can make some cash Why not let the neighbors comb and rummage through it Its satisfaction guaranteed And I think that the instructions are included Yardsale Mile after mile Early morning Saturday Yardsale Outgrown and out of style Sometimes you can’t give it away Yardsale We outta throw it all away Those musty memories and regrets Yardsale Instead we put them on display And try to sell them off to the next Mrs Flynn was out today Her husband past away I think it was in ’97 She has a 65 Dodge covered in the back garage and it has to be in mint condition They had bought it for their son but he died at 21 in a military expedition I sat down and had a cup to tea in her kitchen and she and told me all about him.

Flowers and rainbows are the farthest things from her mind Work and family takes up all of her time Flowers and rainbows wait for her beyond window blinds But she's too busy to let a little light in Early rise at 6 AM Exercise and Raisin Bran Her morning just began Pull some clothes that she can wear Make her face and do her hair Off to the day care Staring out windows Reminiscing when she was young She and Emily and all her friends having fun Flowers and rainbows wait for her at an open door But she's got an appointment First, the department store A pair of shoes, A card for Kate A cup of coffee would taste great But she's running so late A stack of dishes getting higher A load off laundry in the dryer And she's getting so tired All this running around is adding to nothing She got lots of ambition but gets nowhere But then it hit her Things have gotta change and its gonna start right now To change her condition she's gotta do something So she called up the boss and said she won't be in the office today It can wait another day ahh, but what's her husband gonna say? The kids are more important than business as usual Tony agreed without a fight The family budget will be tight But they're gonna be alright Flowers and rainbows...

Day in and day out I drive down the same route Half asleep at the wheel I’m just waiting to pull out Something caught my eye on the drive On the corner of 2nd and Pine I turned to look what it said The headline on the billboard read Who killed Gary Miller? The Police are in need of some leads to proceed in this crime Got a clue? If you do won’t you please call the hot-line. An outstanding family man Found dead around 6 am Someone’s even posted a reward for 100 grand Who killed Gary Miller? I hear a widow at night singing a sad song She's been living alone now for so long Trying to make the best of her life ever since he's gone She's got to sell the estate and contend to move on 'cause her husband's not coming home Day in and day out i pass through the same town But something happened today They were taking the bill down Replaced by a furniture store Selling mid-century home decor 12 easy payments And you can own this bedroom set Come today, you can save up to 40 percent I wonder if they found the guy, I wonder if they caught him yet Who killed Gary Miller?

She donned heels of flight A dashing flash of life We loved to watch her fly We all cheered In anticipation the church bells were rung She could outrun lightning Soaring through the sky She reached the speed of light In a twinkling of an eye She disappeared A search was amassed but alas she was gone She could outrun lightning Destined to shine on her day in the Sun Her morning was over before it begun She could outrun lightning

Here in the foundry four walls surround me I'm just a prisoner doing time It's the same routine, I run the same machine At least it's not the unemployment line I spend my evenings counting cars When I could be out the counting cars I'm prone to daydreaming When I feel the those walls closing I think about what could've been If I could be anything I'd bide my time on the wing And fly beyond what we can see You wouldn't believe me I always wanted to be an astronaut But I'm just a nobody, I'm just a number The cards were stacked against me from day one I could've been somebody, I could have been someone Strap me in and point me to the Sun Wave to all the earthlings on TV Splashdown in the deep blue sea An unrelenting juggernaut No second chance or second thoughts I'm ready for infinity I hear that voice counting down Will this thing get off the ground? My heart is pounding electricity Set me free, just set me free I always wanted to be an astronaut Hey down there do you remember me? I'm feeling fine at zero-G Out here on the edge of space I can meet my maker face to face and ask HIm things that have perplexed me for years I don't mean no disrespect but the human race sure has made a mess What did you expect? Supersonic flashlight, something doesn't feel right I think I may be marooned out here all night That's alright I always wanted to be an astronaut

It sure is tough Sometimes it’s downright rough It keeps piles on when you’ve had enough Are you with me? I’ve had my doubts That this is all its about Is it real or am I acting it out Then it hit me I know the Man upstairs got the plans And He’s building it now A little place for us all A shelter from the storm You're tired of chancing it You want some answers. Yeah, I’m telling you how Well all you’ve gotta do is open your door to Love Hopes and dreams Not easy as they seem You keep tryin but you’re ready to scream Are you with me? I’ve had my doubts That this is all its about Is it real or am I acting it out Then it hit me

about

Randall Hamlin has a wild imagination. He anchors it in solid songwriting craft, polished instrumental skills and a sure grasp of recording essentials. There’s no denying his credentials as an artist – but it’s his ability to find the extraordinary in the everyday world that truly sets him apart.

Hamlin’s unique musical vision runs through every track on Local News, his new collection of self-penned songs. Its key track “The Breaker Boys” is a rousing rock anthem that pays homage to the struggles of Pennsylvania’s coal mining country. Tunes like “Flowers and Rainbows” and “Yardsale” explore life’s difficult choices, while “She Could Outrun Lightning” and “Who Killed Gary Miller” are character sketches with darkly poignant shadings. By turns thoughtful, defiant and bittersweet, these tracks reflect an artist who doesn’t settle for the ordinary lyrically or musically.

Based in Berks County PA, Hamlin has been working towards releasing Local News for over a decade. “This is my first attempt at putting together all these years of learning and experimenting,” he says. “I’d say that my music has evolved along with my ability to capture it in the studio.” What’s remained constant is his creative method as a songwriter: “I don’t tend to write lyrics that reveal my feelings directly. I’d rather tell a story. I’m probably not the main character in the story, but I may be lurking somewhere in the background…”

Hamlin’s own story begins with childhood experiments creating mix tapes with a Panasonic cassette recorder. At 15, he started learning guitar and putting songs down on tape. Listening to everyone from Led Zeppelin and Donovan to Pink Floyd and Robyn Hitchcock, he developed a versatile touch as a guitaristand a fondness for surreal lyric expression.

For years, Hamlin has been working on songs while improving his recording technique. 2016 saw the release of “My Glass Head” and “Your Double Helix” on 7-inch vinyl, a pair of strikingly original tunes that drew upon his fascination with physics, space and time. His trademark blend of well-shaped melodies, quirky lyric narrative and inventive production have been developed further on Local News. Fans of everything from the ‘60s rock sounds of the Beatles, Kinks and Beach Boys to the latter-day chamber pop of Belle & Sebastian will find a lot to fall in love with here – but most of all, a wit, tenderness and tunefulness very much Hamlin’s own comes through in these tracks.

In his song “I Always Wanted to Be an Astronaut,” Randall Hamlin longs to discover a wider universe beyond the confines of the commonplace. From his studio work to his live performances, he’s shown this kind of commitment to going beyond the familiar and the expected. Wherever his imagination takes him next, it will no doubt be amazing to hear.
